Nashville Attractions - Discover the Eclectic and Electric Charm of Music City

!±8± Nashville Attractions - Discover the Eclectic and Electric Charm of Music City

Nashville attractions are boundless and offer up a buffet of excitement and intrigue coupled with rich history and a tune to go with everyone's beat. Nashville is known as "Music City", but in recent years its reputation has grown to encompass a broad scope of entertainment. It is also the home of sporting events from football, hockey and baseball games, as well as and performances from the symphony, ballet, opera and theater.

Nashville is the capitol of Tennessee and is surrounded by lush, rolling hills and sparkling lakes, which translates into a lot of outdoor fun for visitors. With great Nashville theme parks like Wave Country and Nashville Shores, as well as hiking trails, campsites, boat and Jet Ski rentals, visitors can have a lot of fun while discovering the natural beauty of the area. The outdoor activities alone could take up several days of one's vacation.

Due to its strong cultural and traditional background and over 20 colleges and universities, Nashville has also evolved to become a popular metropolitan area that it is often referred to as the "Athens of the South".It is fitting that the 'Athens of the South' is home to the world's only full-size replica of the ancient Parthenon.

Originally built in 1897, the Parthenon stands proudly as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville's premier urban park. The 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon and is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. The basement galleries also serve as an art museum with permanent and revolving collections.

Despite its modern, urban feel, many people still visit Nashville just to come face-to-face with their favorite country music stars and tour the city's famous publishing companies, record labels and Music Row recording studios. The 1950s-style RCA Studio B is said to have launched more hit records than any other recording studio in the country. If you catch a glimpse of someone on Music Row who looks an awful lot like Alan Jackson or another artist, it probably is. Many country stars have homes in Franklin and nearby Leiper's Fork.

Visitors can also take bus tours of famous stars' homes, catch a show at the Grand Ole Opry, and visit the beautiful Opryland Hotel. This great Nashville attraction boasts nine acres of lush indoor gardens and winding rivers where guests can take a tour on a Delta flatboat or enjoy a million twinkling lights during their Christmas Spectacular.

Located across from the Opryland Hotel is the loading platform for visitors to board and enjoy a cruise on the General Jackson Showboat. Live shows are performed during dinner in the beautiful two-story Victorian Theater located in the center of the boat. With four massive decks to take in the views, the 300- foot paddleboat takes guests down the Cumberland River to historic downtown Nashville.

The downtown area also features other Nashville attractions where visitors can enjoy the simple twang and narrative lyrics of country music. The popular Wildhorse Saloon sits on 2nd Avenue, and lying between 3rd and 4th streets lays Printer's Alley, one of the top places to go for Nashville nightlife where visitors can walk through the alley and revel in the deep history it holds.

Another downtown Nashville attraction steeped in history is the world-famous Ryman Auditorium. During the daytime, visitors can tour the "Mother Church of Country Music" and stand on the stage to hear stories of when Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and other country legends performed there early in their careers. Memorabilia like stage outfits and guitars also are on display.

The Country Music Hall of Fame is nearby and features numerous exhibits on the history and impact of country music. The museum is the largest popular music museum in the world and features entertaining films, interactive displays, and an incredible array of costumes and instruments. From the early pioneers to the modern chart-toppers, you'll find every era of country music well represented throughout.

During a trip downtown, visitors can buff up on history of a different sort and visit a replica of the original Fort Nashborough, which stands at the foot of Broadway. Fort Nashborough was the first permanent European settlement in the area and was built on the banks of the Cumberland River in 1779.

A list of Nashville attractions wouldn't be complete without mentioning some of the great museums that are available. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts features some of the nation's most cutting-edge masterpieces. Located downtown on Broadway, a visit to The Frist is a convenient and cultural experience where visitors also have the chance to express their creative side and create their own masterpiece in the Martin Artquest Gallery.

The Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art also features American and contemporary art while the Adventure Science Center can be an entertaining way to introduce children to science. Kids of all ages can learn about technology, the environment, physics, and health as they roam the museum pushing buttons and turning knobs in the interactive exhibits. The Nashville Zoo at Grassmere is a zoo and historic plantation that is also a great place to spend the afternoon and learn a little something.

Sports fans can also get their fill during a Nashville vacation with Nashville Sounds baseball, Nashville Predators hockey and Tennessee Titans football. For those looking for some fast-paced fun, the Nashville Superspeedway is located just outside of town in Lebanon. If shopping is your sport of choice, the Opry Mills Mall is filled with dozens of brand name stores, like Saks Fifth Avenue, Old Navy and Bass Pro Shop. You can also take in a meal at The Aquarium Restaurant and watch dozens of sea creatures swim by in the huge 150, 000 gallon aquarium.

As you can see, Music City has a lot to offer its visitors no matter what they're into. With more than 40 centralized attractions in the Nashville area, the city offers excitement and fun for every member of the family. Whether you'd like to sample music, sports, outdoors or history, there's a Nashville attraction that is sure to entertain you on your next Tennessee vacation.

East Texas Piney Woods

!±8± East Texas Piney Woods

If you told someone you were going to visit Texas they would probably picture an image of a wide open range with some cactus and tumbleweeds. The reality is that Texas is a very diverse state with several distinct regions that offer its visitors an opportunity to experience a broad array of cultures, climates, terrains, and lifestyles all within the boundaries of The Lone Star State. Today I want to talk about the East Texas Piney Woods region. This part of Texas does not have tumbleweeds and although there are some cactus it is not the type that you will see in the movies. East Texas is an area filled with history, old town charm, and a long forgotten lifestyle.

This region of Texas is called the Piney Woods for good reason. It is home to thousands of acres pine trees that are planted and harvested by the paper and lumber companies. This industry is a major source of revenue and employs, directly or indirectly, a large percentage of the working people around East Texas. But pines are not the only trees grow in this region. This area is also an excellent source for hardwoods like the magnolia, oak, ash, elm, and cypress just to name a few. With four national forests, five state forest, and many large privately owned wooded ranches any outdoor enthusiasts will surely find East Texas a great place to explore.

If you enjoy camping, fishing, and hunting then you need look no further. East Texas has some of the most beautiful settings in which to park your RV and watch the sunset. If fishing is more your style, this region is home to several world class lakes and reservoirs full of largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. There are many top quality impoundments in the area like Lake Fork, Toledo Bend, Lake Livingston, and Caddo Lake just to name a few. Then there is Lake Sam Rayburn, just north of Jasper, one of the top fishing lakes in the country and a frequent stop for many professional fishing tournaments. Lake Sam Rayburn draws annually some of top ranked professional and amateur fishermen, and women, from around the country to its water every year to try and find that elusive record bass. Rayburn, Toledo Bend, and Caddo Lake all offer excellent crappie fishing too, but if it is catfish you want then you should head to Lake Livingston in Polk County. Catfish are so abundant that the daily bag limit on this lake is higher than on any other lake in Texas. Each fall deer hunter from all over the US make their way to East Texas for their shot at a trophy buck. The thick underbrush, heavy timber, and wide spread availability of forage is a perfect recipe for big trophy buck.

If you enjoy reading and seeing history and historic sites then East Texas has a lot to offer. Visit Nacogdoches, "The Oldest Town In Texas", originally established as a Spanish fort in the mid 1700s and in 1832 it is widely believed that the first shots fired in the Texas Revolution were fired right here in Nacogdoches Texas. Still a thriving community and home to Stephen F. Austin State University. Just a little further up the road in Kilgore where you will find the "World's Richest Acre". Actually about 1.2 acres, once stood the largest concentration of oil derricks during the oil boom days. And nearby Tyler Texas is home to the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, the nation's largest municipal rose garden. This is a must see in the spring.

The Christmas season is another exciting time to visit East Texas. Many of the historic homes throughout the area take on a very traditional holiday spirit. With thousands of lights and old fashion decorations these home will remind you of a lifestyle from a past era. Many of the small towns throughout East Texas decorate their town squares in celebration of the holiday season and transform themselves into holiday wonderlands offering tours of the historic homes decorated for the holidays and many still offer traditional Christmas parades.

This is just a small sampling of everything available throughout East Texas. When you are planning your next vacation be sure and explore what East Texas has to offer. The culture, scenery, history, lifestyle, and the food are all worth the trip to the Piney Woods of East Texas.

A Simple Weight Loss Program

!±8± A Simple Weight Loss Program

Notice, by the way, that the title of this article is "A Simple Weight Loss Program", NOT "An EASY Weight Loss Program".

There's an old saying to the effect that anything worth having is worth working for. However, in today's society, it sometimes seems as if the emphasis is, if not "something for nothing", then at least "a lot for a little". People are seeking pills, potions, fad diets, whatever they think it will take to create permanent healthy weight loss so that they can live happily ever after.

The truth is, that while the facts of effective, healthy, permanent weight loss are well known, and have been well known for many years, there are many, many people who have not gotten the word, or who heard it and didn't believe it. To make matters worse, the pill pushers and fad diet spinners know that many people who don't really know the process, or are not willing to make the effort required by a valid, effective weight loss program, will be easy prey for their pseudo-scientific, or just plain bogus, claims.

Confusing the issue is that many of these claims are based, at least in some small degree, on actual data. Other touted methods for "easy weight loss" often are actually simple weightloss helps or aids that need to be incorporated into an effective weightloss program before they really do much good.

A recent example of this is the diet pill, Alli. It is expensive, has some possible side affects that would convince me not to take it, and, if you read the fine print, really doesn't offer THAT much in the way of weight loss. Taken by itself, it CAN help someone lose weight in small amounts, but it is really only effective if used in conjunction with the simple weightloss program I am going to talk about in a moment.

One drawback to all of these weightloss nostrums and incantations is that the weight loss is only going to occur while the person continues to take the pill or eat the special diet. Another is that the weight loss is not necessarily "healthy" weight loss.

Yes! It is possible to lose weight (which is supposed to be good for you) and actually negatively affect your health at the same time!

Just to play the Devil's advocate for a moment, what I am about to propose must also become a lifelong weightloss, or rather, weight management, issue or else the weight will also return. However, under the weightloss system below, the weight loss will be healthy in nature, and the side effects will include such weird things as increased energy, a better emotional outlook, the ability to participate in more fun activities, and the opportunity to live longer and live well during those additional years.

Put that on your diet pill label!

Oh yeah! Did I mention it was free?

Anyway, after all that, here is a simple weightloss program that WILL WORK.

There is only one stipulation.

YOU MUST NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!

You see, that is why so many things in life do not turn out the way we wish. We give up too soon.

Do not expect to see results overnight, and do not expect that what I am about to tell you will turn you into a fashion model or bodybuilding hunk. To get those kinds of results, you have to do the kind of exercise and nutritional regimens that those people have opted for. However, if you begin this simple weight loss program, you will lose weight over time.

How much weight?

No one can answer that. While weight loss will occur pretty much in direct proportion to the amount of effort expended, many things will still impact the results. Your genes will have some input, as will your physical condition and the amount of weight you are carrying, if you are a male or female, if you are younger or older, if you slip once in a while...and many other factors.

The simple truth of weight gain and weight loss is that when a person takes in more calories than their body burns, they gain weight. When, on the other hand, they burn more calories than they take in...they lose weight. That simple!

Sure, when you eat, what you eat, how old you are, how much sleep you get, and whether or not you take Alli or some other diet pill will help sway the figures in one direction or another, but...

IF YOU USE MORE CALORIES THAN YOU TAKE IN YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT!

Many people having heard that will fall into the trap of thinking that if they just eat less, they will lose weight. That is called a "diet", and diets don't work! The human body is designed to go into survival mode if you take away its expected food supply. That means it dials down its calorie burning process (metabolism) and exists on fewer calories. It also begins to cannibalize its own tissue for materials it needs for repair and maintenance if it does not get enough nutrition from the food you eat.

While eating smarter instead of simply eating less will help you lose weight, time is against you. As you age, your metabolism will slow down more and more for several reasons, putting you in the unfortunate circumstance of cutting your food intake, which we know is a bad thing, at least insofar as what we are trying to do, which is achieve a healthy, but simple weightloss program.

The problem must be attacked from two angles at once.

You must exercise AND adopt healthy eating practices and habits.

Now, don't let the idea of "exercise" scare you. In this context, it simply means "physical activity" of 30 minutes duration or more at least five times a week. Yes, that could be running or weightlifting, or study of the martial arts, or raking leaves, or gardening, or walking...you get the idea. The key is the 30 minutes or more, done at least 5 times a week, week after week after week for the rest of your life.

Before you run off with your hands waving in the air in despair, think about it. What if you swam today, walked tomorrow, did some weightlifting the next day, yoga the next, gardening the next. What if instead of just "walking" you joined a hiking club, or instead of trying to lift weights five days a week, you did it two or three times a week and filled in the other days with other activities.

Okay, you are busy. How about a 15 minute walk in the morning, a 15 minute walk in the afternoon, and a 15 - 30 minute walk at lunch? Why not get up and do yoga before you start your day...or at the end of your day. It's very relaxing as well as...well, you know...exercise.

It is actually best if you have two different types of exercise. One should be strength building and one should be cardio (aerobic) in nature. That is because cardio burns more calories DURING the exercise period, while strength building creates lean muscle mass which burns calories while you are watching TV or stuck in traffic on your way to or from work.

As far as healthy eating habits are concerned, you really know pretty much what you should be doing already. Smaller portions, more veggies and fresh fruits, hold off on the sauces (dip your fork in the dressing and then pick up the lettuce instead of pouring the dressing over the lettuce), and eat more often. That's right. Try to eat about six nutritional "meals" a day, spaced about 2 1/2 hours apart. Six small meals are more effective nutritionally and for weight loss than three big meals...with snacks anyway!

Watch your portions sizes, however. In addition to being a "broadening" subject, proper eating is a broad subject. Start looking at food labels. You might be surprised at what the proper size of a "portion" is. Cut the fats, and try to stay away from too many processed things...animal, vegetable, or mineral. As a rule of thumb, the closer to "natural" it is, especially fruits and veggies, the healthier it probably is for you. Try some of the whole wheat breads, by the way.

Start substituting low-cal items, but pay attention to the labels. Sometimes a low-fat item has just about as many calories as the original and humans, silly people that we are, eat more thinking that it's okay. Things will not taste good, or "as good" at first, but trust me, you DO get used to it. My wife and I picked up some doughnut holes yesterday morning and could barely stand them, they were SOOOOO sweet. We had just gotten accustomed to subtler tastes and flavors.

If you are not already taking a daily multivitamin...start. Most people do not get the proper levels of nutrients (vitamins and minerals) that they need anyway. If you are avoiding this or that food, or trying to keep levels down, you might be missing something. This is particularly true if, like me, you are classified as a SENIOR! Senior bodies don't get and properly process all the nutrients they need anyway, so take your vitamin and you might want to take some sort of protein supplement daily as well as protein deficiencies are common in us older folk as well.

So, how hard is all that?

Looks like a fairly simple weightloss program to me.
